Family friendly comedy?  It sucks.

All ages show?  Hell no.

These are the reactions I get when I tell people we are doing an all ages or family friendly show...and I don't get it.  You do realize that if you're going to see a comedian, and that comedian is relying on the word fuck to get laughs, that comedian "fucking" sucks.

You've all seen the comedian.  Whether it's a girl who's trying to get the shock laugh by talking about how big of a slut she is.  He put this in there and then I screamed, "Aw, hell no."  Drunks in a bar laugh because they are stupid at that moment.  You have the generic dude, "Man, I was so stoned, and then I heard this noise, and I was like, fuck."

Sure, those can get a laugh, but they aren't good comedians.  Getting a laugh is one thing, but tell those same jokes to the same people when they aren't hammered at 11:00pm on a Friday night and they will probably go, eh, whatever.  It's like that great cover band you heard at the bar last night!  Dude, they were epic!  Then you buy their CD because they "are definitely going somewhere," and you listen to it the next day and they are awful.

Family friendly doesn't mean I'm performing a little kids comedy hour up there full of fart jokes and weird characters.  It means I'm not going to drop an f bomb every third word.  The word doesn't make the joke funny.  People say, but look at George Carlin.  I do.  What I see is a brilliant man who understood when and where to push buttons.  He hit on topics that were controversial from a mind that was ahead of it's time.  Look at Chris Rock, yeah, same thing.  You could take every profane word out of his bit, and it wouldn't quite be as good, but it would be close.

Bill Engvall could probably gain a few fans by cursing up a storm, but he doesn't need to.  He is creative enough to make the adults laugh right along with the kids.  You want to see a great stand-up comedy bit?  Look up his bit with Vicodin Land (I've linked it here for you).  The guy is essentially doing a bit about being jacked up on drugs and can tell it in front of all ages of comedy fans...and it's funny.  I say this because I'm doing about 30 minutes of pg-13 standup tonight, and I realized, it's really not that different from my main bits.  Then I was working on some of my other material and I realized, the bits I won't do there aren't any of my best bits, it just weeds out the jokes that you use to get laughs from somebody who is two blunts and 8 beers deep.
